Présentation
La version studio de With or Without tutoie la perfection et fut un succès sans précédent pour le groupe, devenant son premier numéro un dans les charts américains. Elle reste l’un des cinq tubes majeurs de sa carrière. Sa ligne de basse et sa guitare planante sont rentrées dans l’histoire. On aime la structure du titre qui commence comme une ballade romantique, avant d’entamer une montée progressive, longue, sensuelle, et de se faire de plus en plus lourd et passionné jusqu’à exploser sous l’impulsion de Bono.
On retient évidemment les versions live de 1987, majestueuses, accompagnées d’un snippet magique de Love Will Tear Us Apart et du mythique et jouissif “Shine Like Stars”. On aime également la version du leg 5 du Zoo TV Tour, s’enchaînant avec brio à Lemon et chantée avec plus de distance. Le titre est devenu depuis un peu lassant en live, interprété avec moins de conviction, et aurait mérité qu’on le ménage de temps en temps. Mais comment reprocher à U2 d’avoir du mal à se priver d’un tel tube ?
