Bien sûr ce titre sera toujours loin de faire l’unanimité. Mofo est l’aboutissement du cheminement commencé avec Achtung Baby et poursuivi avec Zooropa. C’est le symbole de Pop. U2 est alors au sommet de son expérience électronique, juste avant de rétropédaler et de rentrer dans le rang. Un titre jouissif pour quiconque aime ce type de sonorité et cette période de la carrière du groupe.
On apprécie également le thème du morceau, le fait que Bono s’adresse directement à sa mère, à ses filles, et s’interroge sur son statut de rock star. Tragiquement porté disparu depuis, Mofo fut l’excellent titre d’ouverture de la tournée PopMart. Le souvenir de Bono haranguant la foule dans son peignoir de boxeur avant que les lumières et l’écran ne fassent exploser le stade reste profondément ancré dans notre mémoire de fans. Une mention spéciale doit être accordée à la version jouée aux MTV Europe Music Awards après une introduction enflammée de Dennis Hopper. Un moment de grâce.
Un clin d’oeil enfin à cette version démo du morceau, entendue sur une vidéo promotionnelle à destination d’Universal en 1996, nettement plus brute et plus rock que la version finale, et qui confine tout bonnement au sublime.
